The birthstone peridot (pronounced pear-a-doe) is a brilliant green to green-yellow or olive color. Ancient Romans loved its sparkle and named it the "evening emerald." The most important deposits are found on a volcanic island in the middle of the Red Sea. Peridot is relatively soft (6.5 on the Mohs scale), so should be in a protective setting.
